Lamavis was born in Long Beach, California and raised in Compton. He started drawing in 1998 at the request of his parents as a way to be in conversation with them. In all of his paintings there are symbols that are messages for them. He began painting in prison around 2018, after joining the William James Art and Corrections program. Lamavis blends the art styles of Klimt, Seurat, Michelangelo, and Picasso to create portraits honoring the beauty and sacrifice of Black women. His style, which he calls Fusion, combines pointillism with at least two other disciplines—blending vivid scenes of Black females inspired by biblical themes.
